It’s 1:30 in the morning, Greg isn’t back from his band’s gig yet, and I hear some thumping and weird noises from our back deck area. The noises are high-pitched and bring to mind the sound of nails on a blackboard. After jumping out of bed, I hurriedly turn on lots of lights in the house, grab a substantial flashlight and my pepper spray. My heart is pounding and I’m *freaking out*.
After listening for awhile, weapons in hand, I head back upstairs to take a peek out of the windows to see if I can spot anything. It is then that I notice a large shape on the ground next to the deck. And next to the bird feeder. There were masked bandits invading our yard after all! But thankfully the furry, cute (and yet annoying) kind.
Feeling relieved, I run back downstairs, turn on the outside light to see two very large raccoons eating all the bird seed. No wonder the feeder is almost empty after only three days. Again. And now I am pretty sure I know why my other feeder fell out of the tree and broke earlier this summer.
They weren’t too concerned by my discovery of them and slowly and reluctantly ambled under the deck after I pounded on the sliding glass door to scare them away.
This is the second time I’ve seen raccoons in our yard going under the deck in recent months. I hope they don’t set up residence under there.
