Learning About Orchestral Music

Each week, the girls and I read about a different composer and then listen to excerpts of their work or watch their pieces be played by an orchestra on Youtube. This week, it was Igor Stravinsky and his “Rite of Spring.” Adrianna liked the dissonance found in the piece and we were intrigued to learn how many people in the audience hated it when it first premiered in Paris and how the theatre was in an uproar.

Adrianna likes to compose her own music on the keyboard and this week, I’ve noticed that she is experimenting with throwing some dissonance into her playing.

In another music story, Cate just brought a toy piano to me that plays a few preprogrammed tunes. She gave it to me, and with a very frustrated and disappointed voice informed me, “I fustated. ‘Dis piano don’t pay Mickey Mouse Cub!”
