Adding to our Family

On May 11th (the Friday before Mother’s Day), we found out we were expecting another baby. This was quite a surprise to both Greg and I, considering our past struggle with infertility and the need to take Clomid to even get pregnant with our sweet Bree in 2009.

I had begun to suspect that perhaps I could be pregnant a few days prior when my period was late. Although with my PCOS, this happens often so I tried not to get my hopes up since they were so often dashed in the past. But I was also having some other minor symptoms, including an increase in heartburn. So I went to the store to buy a pregnancy test (unbeknownst to Greg).

When I took the pregnancy test, it showed positive right away. I cannot even describe the feelings I experienced as I saw the little plus sign. Elation, surprise, excitement, amazement would be just a hint of what went through my mind. And I couldn’t help but shed tears of joy.

After awhile, I slipped downstairs to share the news with Greg. I gave him a big hug and thanked him for “the best Mother’s Day present ever”. After a very brief moment, he asked, “Are you pregnant?”

I think we spent awhile in shock and surprise. In fact, I still feel like I need to pinch myself that this is really happening.

I went to visit the doctor the following week (around 5 weeks pregnant) to get my hormone levels checked and to confirm that everything was as it should be. My progesterone levels were too low so I had to take a progesterone supplement until 12 weeks to help keep the pregnancy. (I had to do the same when I was pregnant with Bree.)

Even though the girls were with me at the appointment, neither caught on that I was pregnant. In fact, we kept it a secret from everyone until I hit 12 weeks. Then we told Adrianna and Bree first. Adrianna gasped in excitement. She’d been asking for a little brother or sister for awhile. Bree didn’t understand at all. She still doesn’t. She will be in for a surprise in a few months!

I have had three ultrasounds so far. The baby is a wiggly little thing and looks healthy. Adrianna likes to oooh and aah at the baby when she sees it on ultrasound. 🙂

Our due date is January 8. I am 16 weeks along (tomorrow) and feeling great. Everything has been going pretty smoothly. My belly started popping out right away. I guess it knows what to do after having gone through this a couple times already. Hardly any nausea so far. I’ve just been really tired (as expected) and having extra heartburn and headaches. Thankfully, the girls let me sleep in (most days). Now that Adrianna can tell time, she has been instructed not to ask me for anything before 8:00 a.m. After that, she can ask to play video games or watch cartoons until I get up, which is whenever Bree decides to get up. (Usually around 9 or 9:30.)

We still haven’t decided what the bedroom situation will be when this baby arrives. I am thinking Bree and Adrianna will continue to share a room and the baby will room with us the first few months. After that, we’ll see. We also knew it was time to upgrade our vehicle to one with more room. We loved our 2007 Toyota Rav4, but there just wasn’t room for more than 2 carseats in the back. So this weekend, we took the plunge and bought a 2010 Honda Odyssey. It can seat 8 and I think it should serve us well. The girls are excited about the new car and were happy to ride in it for the first time today. As Bree kept repeating, “Rie new cow.” (Ride new car.)

Here is a picture of baby Reimer from June 28th. I think I was 12 weeks along.

I am so excited to add this little one to our family. A little nervous too. For the first time, we will have two in diapers, since Bree isn’t showing any signs of being anywhere close to being ready to being potty-trained. With Adrianna and Bree, we had almost a 5 year age difference, which was pretty easy. Bree and this new little one will be just three years apart. I am sure that will be more difficult. But at 7 years old, Adrianna is a big help and I am sure that will continue.

We will find out if we are having a boy or a girl on August 16th. I cannot wait!!

  1. I loved reading your story! Congratulations again, and we’re SO excited to meet our newest niece or nephew!

  2. I am thrilled for you and excited that we’ll have 2 babies so close in age! I’ll be looking for that post on whether it is a boy or girl – can’t wait to hear the news!! My ultrsound will be August 9th so we’ll have some emails to exchange!

  3. So very happy for you and Greg and the girls. My daughter just found out the same news and is due with her 3rd child Feb 23rd. She has 2 boys now, Kaiden is 5 and will be 6 in November and Zack is 2 and will also have just turned 3 in December when this little one is born. Seems very similar although Adrianna is a little older. Good luck and good health to you!!
