First Day of Kindergarten (and Homeschooling)

Wow, August has been a busy month for us. The girls and I took a week long trip to Indiana for a family reunion, we had visits from Aunt Kristi, Grammy and Grampy, I had a MOPS Steering retreat to attend, and I got to go wedding dress shopping with Cindy, Karen and my mom for Cindy’s 9/10/2011 wedding. On top of that, school has officially started for the year.

Just five days before Adrianna was to start school with our homeschool co-op and only a day after I had placed an order for our homeschool curriculum, our first choice for charter schools called with an opening for this year. I thought about it for all of 10 minutes and decided to continue on with our decision to homeschool. Though I really would like her to be able to go to that charter school in the future, I just didn’t feel it was the best choice for us this year. Mainly because I am not ready for my little girl to be gone five full days a week. (They don’t have half-day or part-time options.)

I had decided to have our first day of school be on Tuesday, August 31, which would be the first day of her homeschool co-op. But Adrianna was so excited about all our new curriculum that had arrived over the weekend that she begged me to do school on Monday. So we had an unofficial school day because frankly, I was excited too! Look at all these great books we get to read! I think I am really going to like this curriculum.

On Tuesday, it was time for our official start to the year with her first day at our homeschool co-op. There are maybe 10 kids in Adrianna’s Kindergarten class there. Adrianna seemed to enjoy her day and came home chattering about recess and art. Her two favorite subjects. 🙂

Today we started our first official day of schooling at home. I think it went well and I am feeling encouraged for our school year together. Adrianna read aloud two short 1 page stories from I Can Read It! Book 1 and we read and discussed several chapters in The Boxcar Children for Reading/English, we read our Jesus Storybook for Bible class (creation), we read about dinosaurs and the first people in The Usborne Children’s Encyclopedia, and we talked about calendars, days of the week, and played with our pattern block manipulatives for Math. We didn’t get everything done that I had hoped but since we read extra in The Boxcar Children (at Adrianna’s request), I am sure we can squeeze it in another day.

Bree was great while we did school. When she wasn’t napping, she happily crawled around on the floor playing with toys and exploring everything left within her reach.

  1. I am glad your homeschooling and that you both are excited for it 🙂 Cute sisters picture here 🙂

  2. So fun! The Boxcar Children was the first chapter book I ever read on my own. I LOVED it (still do).

  3. Looks like fun! I talked to a friend who knew two families from our church that use the Sonlight curriculum. I have great respect for these gals, so was glad to hear about it. She said the curriculum is built around reading with a global/missions emphasis. Is that how you have it sized up?

    Happy schooling!
