A Boy Named Devon

I enjoy picking Adrianna up from her Junior Kindergarten. She is often talkative and it is fun hearing about her day and all that she has learned. Sometimes I have to ask questions to draw the information out but it is always worth it. I have found out that her favorite parts of the day are Art and “Centers” (Centers is where they split into groups and have self-directed play with puzzles and other learning games). She must also like music a lot because she is always singing new songs and talking about different musical instruments. Her least favorite part of the day is Writing. But for it being her least favorite, she sure is doing well at it.

I also get to hear about all her classmates, who she played with and who got to stay on green or who had to go on red (i.e. who was naughty or nice as shown on a traffic light used for behavior and sticker rewards at the end of the day). I recognize all of her immediate classmates by name and face from attending various events so it is nice to get this extra glimpse into her day.

Wednesday afternoon, on our way home, Adrianna told me that she was going to marry a boy named Devon. This was news to me. Not only had I never heard of a Devon before, but up until this point the only person she has ever expressed an interest in marrying is her Daddy. So naturally I was curious to know more about this Devon. I asked her why she wanted to marry Devon. Her answer was something along the lines of “because he is nice and he always lets me play with him when I ask.” I guess those are two good reasons when you are 4 (almost 5) years old.

She mentioned her friend Devon again on the way home from Junior Kindergarten on Thursday. Since she had talked about him on the way home from school two days in a row, I assumed that he was a new classmate of hers. So when we attended her Spring program that evening, I pored over the leaflet to find out who this mysterious Devon could be. There weren’t any Devons listed among her fellow Junior Kindergartners. I continued to run down the list of names and finally found the one and only Devon listed for her small school. A sixth grader. His part in the play was a rock star; the drummer in fact. Greg and I got a good chuckle about her going after a rock star already.

When the Junior Kindergarten part of the performance was done, Adrianna was able to join us in the audience for the remainder of the program. I asked her to point out Devon to me to confirm if this rock star was indeed THE Devon. She looked at me and using a voice that indicated that I should have known this already, she said, “No. He’s not here. Devon is from Sunday School.”

Hmmm…I have to admit that I was quite relieved that the boy is not only from church or MOPS (which is synonymous to Sunday School when talking to Adrianna) but also probably closer to her in age.

  1. Oh, sweet Adrianna, talking about marriage! So glad she has her eyes on a nice SS friend. 🙂 But she has to wait about 20 years, right?
