The Other Baby Sister

I recently put some of my printed digital layouts into an album. Adrianna enjoys looking through them and she asked me about the page I made after I had my miscarriage (shown below).

She recognized that it was an ultrasound picture and asked me if it was her baby sister that is in my tummy. When I said no, she asked if it was her when she was in my tummy. Again, I had to answer no.

I decided to tell her the truth and told her that when she was 2 years old, Mommy had another baby in her tummy but unfortunately that baby died and went to live with Jesus. I also told her that someday we would meet that little baby again in heaven. She had some questions for me (was it a boy or a girl, she wondered), but she seemed to accept the answer and has brought it up a couple times since then.

Today she drew a picture that really touched my heart, especially considering that it is just a few days prior to the anniversary of my miscarriage. When I asked who she was drawing, I was told that the picture is of her and “the baby sister in your tummy that died”. (Except the baby is shown in HER tummy.) It also includes Molly and Chloe.

She did later change the story that the baby sister shown is the one that is currently in my tummy, but I was still very warmed by her artwork and her tender heart. (She often changes her mind later as to who the pictures are really of.)

  1. Oh, so sweet. Interesting how she understands and accepts and remembers. You described it so sweetly too, Amber, so that she knows the baby is with Jesus. What better place to be….and so real to a child. I’m noticing the big smile.

    Teachable moments….and priceless.

  2. Oh, what a sweet sensitive little girl you have there, Amber. She understands such sensitive things so clearly even at such a young age.
