Super Mario Brothers Birthday Party
My daughter is crazy for the Super Mario Brothers games. Adrianna draws pictures of the characters, daydreams about the characters and talks about the characters all the time. So we decided to surprise her with a Super Mario Brothers themed birthday party for her 6th birthday.
She knew she was going to have a party, she just was unaware of the theme that we had planned for her. She was very excited to invite her classmates and friends – the first time many of them had ever been to our house.
To start off, I made some custom invitations. Mario, of course.
I also made some Mario hats using some plain red hats I found at Walmart by gluing on a Mario logo that Greg and I made (also in Photoshop). We also bought a bunch of self-adhesive mustaches from Oriental Trading Company.
I talked my husband, who is more artistic than I, to draw me a picture of Mario on poster board, sans the mustache. Greg also drew and cut out a bunch of mustaches separately so the kids could play “Pin the Mustache on Mario”. Greg made a play list using various songs from the different Super Mario games throughout the years to play during the party, which definitely added to the day.
Goomba (made from a template found here)
Koopa Troopa (made from a template found here)
I also made cupcakes and cupcake wrappers to look like 1-up and power-up mushrooms.
Planning a party is a lot of work! Greg and I were up past midnight, three nights in a row, getting things ready. My sister and brother-in-law also came down a night early to help cut out the block templates (for the bricks and mystery boxes) and to help hang everything up. So thankful for their help!
When the morning of the party arrived, Adrianna could hardly wait to go downstairs. She didn’t hesitate to put on a Mario hat and mustache for me. And she just happened to have her Super Mario Brothers pajamas on already.
Mario and his many mustaches from “Pin the Mustache on Mario”
Most of the Super Mario Brothers at the party. 🙂
Each child got to take their mustache and Mario hat home with them. They also got a gold mystery box filled with gold-wrapped chocolate coins, mushroom erasers and a mushroom ring.
Babies don’t like wearing mustaches.
It was a fun party and my daughter seemed to enjoy it very much. Now I just need to make some Thank-You cards for all the generous gifts my daughter received. Mario themed cards, of course!
Amber- You did such an amazing job on Adrianna’s party! I am so bummed that Ella didn’t make it. Hopefully we could schedule a playdate sometime soon. Thank you for sharing the pictures!
Mara
Thanks Mara. I know Adrianna would love a playdate with Ella. She talks about Ella all the time. 🙂
hiiii i loved your party ideas !!! i loved how you had the bricks and mystery boxes floating around where did you get the bricks templates ??
Unfortunately, I don’t remember where I found the box template that we used for inspiration for the bricks/boxes. I do remember that it was just a plain box and the template wasn’t large enough since we made our boxes out of a piece of posterboard rather than the typical 8.5×11 piece of paper. We just adjusted the size and free-hand drew a copy on the posterboard. After we folded and taped the boxes together, we just drew bricks or question marks on them with a thick marker and hung them from the ceiling using fishing wire. 🙂
Hi, my son is having a Super Mario Party this August & we always go all out with decorations since I have a very talented mother-in-law that can draw just about anything!! Last year was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which was a task but we did it! 🙂 I’m really big into cake decorating and I was wondering where you made or got your template for your cupcake wrappers!?! & Thank you so much for providing the Goomba & Koopa Troopa template! Those are going to be great decorations for the party!!
Hi Kasi,
We had so much fun creating our Mario Party. We still have the Goomba and Koopa Troopa decorations hung up in our playroom almost a year later. 🙂
For the cupcake wrappers, I made them myself in Photoshop. I searched online for a free cupcake wrapper template (sorry, don’t remember where I got one) and then I just colored the template and made eyes. Once I had the cupcake wrapper template to go off of, they were pretty simple to create.
Good luck with your party!
Hi, I’m curious if the Mario logo on the hats is printed on paper? If so, how did you get it to stay on the hat? My son’s party is Saturday and I was going to use felt. What is your advice?
I printed the logos out on white cardstock paper and then (if I remember correctly) I just glued them on using regular Elmer’s glue and held them in place to make sure the glue dried well. Surprisingly, the logos stayed pretty well and we still have a couple extras floating around our house now, two years later, and they are still stuck on there. I would think that felt would work okay too. 🙂
Good luck with your party! Ours was a lot of work but a lot of fun. My daughter still talks about how much she enjoyed having a Mario party. 🙂
So how did you get those invites?? I planning a HUGE party for my son this year with this same theme with over 70 people and theses are perfect. 🙂
Hi Ariel,
I made those myself in Photoshop. I then put two invites to a 5×7 sheet and had them printed (as photo prints) at Walmart. 🙂
SO TALENTED!! I have to say I am jealous. 🙂 Nice Job!!
Hi ,
You mentioned making some extra mosutaches for pin the moustache game am just wondering why u did to make them stick to paper is it just tape on back ?
Hi Rupa, the mustaches for the game were made out of black construction paper. We just used regular scotch tape (in a roll shape so that it was sticky on both sides) on the backs of each paper mustache. I wanted them to be easily removable so we could keep the Mario drawing after the party. 🙂
