Community and Recycling

I don’t know if it is because I am getting older, but lately I have been feeling a desire to be more involved with my community. I am starting to think about the importance of shopping locally, voting for the elections that don’t even have a president involved, and attending community sponsored events. We even tried to go to our local caucus this year, but unfortunately the website or google maps gave us bad information as to where we needed to go. It probably wasn’t too bad a thing though since Adrianna fell asleep only 5 minutes into our drive, so she probably wouldn’t have been a happy camper had we actually found the place.

Another new thing is that environmental issues are becoming more significant to me. I think this is in part due to the Environmental Board Meeting I attended (as a visitor) here regarding my issue with phone book deliveries not offering consumers an option to be removed from distribution. (That went good, btw.)

I recently read somewhere that the average American throws away 4 pounds of waste every day. How sad. We started recycling maybe a year ago, and now we are upping our commitment to recycle as much of our throwaways as possible. But even more, I would like to reduce the amount of our waste if possible. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Recycling is good, but I think reducing is listed first in that popular slogan because it is the most important.

One way to reduce is with grocery bags. I am seriously thinking about becoming one of those people who buys a reusable canvas bag for their grocery shopping. We DO reuse our plastic bags for trash bags, but we still have them coming out the wazoo, so we can cut down on the number we receive by quite a bit and still have enough. Besides, if we keep recycling, there will be less to throw away, right?

Hey, lately we’ve even been found to be practicing the “If it’s yellow, let it mellow…” philosophy. Which may be partly due to forgetfulness or middle of the night bathroom trips, but I still think it is a good effort. As long as we aren’t expecting company.

  1. Your ‘otro libro de telephono’ post showed up in my bloglines and I was going to comment on that, but I don’t see it here. 🙂 Anyways – all well said, good for you, keep up the good work, way to go! 🙂

  2. Oh yeah, I had it posted for a little while but last time I posted about unwanted telephone deliveries it got some attention on Google and brought haters in. After talking to Greg, I decided to pull it (for now) since we have personal information, especially stuff about Adrianna, on here. I have been going back and forth about making certain parts of my blog private, especially the parts about her, so that only friends and family can login and see. But I don’t want to make people login (yet), so I thought I would just keep flying under the radar for awhile until I make a decision.

But yeah, I am VERY passionate about not being able to opt out of receiving phone books. 🙂

  3. On the wall of my eye doctors’ office is a sign that says: reuse it, use it up, wear it out, or go without. I think there was more to that sign, but I cant remember it all. Good advice though. I am happy your at my house today! Its fun listening to Adrianna sing 🙂 love you`
