Tonight we all played Hide-N-Seek at Adrianna’s request. I think it started out as a bedtime stall tactic more than anything.
Once we started playing, it quickly became apparent that Adrianna really doesn’t know how to play. Greg said he’d count, so he faced the wall, hid his eyes and began the count to 20. As he was counting, Adrianna went to the center of our living room and just ran in circles. Round and round she went. I tried to tell her to go hide in the bathroom but she continued the circles so that when Greg turned around, she was still running around right in the middle of the room.
So we explained to her that she is supposed to hide while Daddy counts and we tried it again. Same thing; more circles.
Third try was the charm and she took my advice and ran to the bathroom to hide. But when Greg finished counting and said “Where’s Adrianna?” she was quick to shout out, “I’m in here, Daddy!”
So he explained to her that she is supposed to hide quietly and let Daddy find her. So they tried again. This time, Greg didn’t say, “Where’s Adrianna” but said his actions aloud, “Is she behind Big Bear?” as he went through the motions of ‘looking’ for her. And once again, Adrianna couldn’t resist shouting out her location.
So Greg decided to reverse roles, letting her count and he would hide. This worked a little better, but she still doesn’t quite have the looking part down yet either. She would walk to the entrance of the room, look in, and then declare that Daddy wasn’t in there. But with a little help, she was able to find him.
All in all, Greg and I are actually glad she doesn’t have the hiding thing down yet. I am worried that the whole hiding thing could come back and bite us in the rear someday.
Oh Ethan loves to hide, although we’ve never played Hide and Seek. Every morning when the abuela comes over, he runs and hides and then screams, Abuela, no estoy. And then when she says, where is Ethan? He’ll say “in the street” and she’ll say something like, What’s he doing in the street with no jacket on? And she’ll go on for a minute about that until Ethan finally runs out and scares her. Sometimes his ‘hiding’ spot is just his hands over his eyes. It’s pretty cute.
