School Board Meeting

Tonight I gave a quick speech at our county’s school board meeting in favor of a charter school seeking permission to open in our county that will serve middle and high school students with autism. It is definitely something that is greatly needed in our community and I was glad to show my support for it. (Even if public speaking makes me very nervous!)

It was a virtual meeting conducted via live stream and Zoom, so I was worried about switching back and forth, getting my video and audio working in the short time allotted, etc. But it all went smoothly. Thankfully, since over 400 people were watching! There were quite a few people signed up to give public comment, some about the charter school but many more about school reopenings / virtual learning, which is a contentious subject. I am glad that I am not on the board that has to make those difficult decisions, because there’s no way that everyone will be happy.

Mia, one of the directors on the board, was so helpful for our family when we were still seeking a diagnosis for Bree, and it is exciting to see her vision for this school. It is my hope that they can gain approval and that they eventually can work with homeschool families like ours, too.
