Out of Network

So say you needed to have surgery done. You did your homework and made sure to choose a surgeon and hospital that were considered “in-network” with your insurance.

Then, literally just minutes before being put under anesthesia, you are introduced to a second doctor who is going to be “assisting” your surgeon. Surprise, surprise.

Months later, when you get the bill, you discover this second doctor is not “in-network” with your insurance so you are responsible to pay the much higher “out-of-network” cost for his assistance since insurance won’t cover it as “in-network”.

Now tell me, who should really be responsible for paying the difference between the in-network and out-of-network cost, since you had no choice in who the surgical assist was (even though your doctor and hospital were in-network)? The hospital/original surgeon, insurance, or you?

Yes, I am frustrated.
