The last stop of the day was Cahir Castle in Tipperary. (Cahir sounds like “care”.) It was once located on an island in the middle of a river, rather than needing a moat. Now it’s in the middle of a town.
Most of the street signs in Ireland are in Irish Gaelic and English, including this one.
This castle even has a working portcullis! Past the portcullis was a small walled “trapping area.” The walls aren’t straight up and down, they are a bit rounded near the bottom so anything dropped from above will bounce out and hit anyone trapped there.
To the left of the bottom slit in the wall is an actual cannonball embedded in the wall.
Our bus driver for our day tour, Phil, was great! I enjoyed the historical facts about Ireland that he gave throughout the day. Can’t wait for our next bus tours coming up in a couple of days – this time with Greg, too!
