Mom, Can We Play Outside?

“Mom, can we play outside?”

I can’t help but sigh inwardly at the question. Denver received the first snow of the season last night so playing outside now means bundling up with socks, boots, snow pants, coats, hats, gloves. It sounds like a hassle, an extra chore. And as much as they try to do it on their own, invariably they need my help. And then when they are done playing and track back in with their sodden clothing, we get to do the entire rigamarole again, just backwards.

But I remember the joy of playing in the snow as a kid. So I do it anyway. And as I watch them explore the winter wonderland and build snow castles for their ponies, with rosy cheeks and joy on their faces, I know it is worth it.
