An African Graduation Party

Our Congolese friend, S, invited us to her high school graduation party. Greg, the girls, and I happily went. Out of about 85-100 attendees, we were the only white attendees and the only ones who were native to America, other than any children who had been born to the other families since their arrival. Everyone else was from Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, or other central African countries. The speeches and prayers were in Swahili. Everyone was so gracious and welcoming to us and a kind gentleman interpreted the speeches for us.

We got to try new foods, watch our girls make new friends, and we are so proud of S and her hard work to graduate from high school after only being in the US for less than a year. I think English is her third language!

It was an experience I’ll never forget and we felt honored and humbled that she invited us. Knowing this family has blessed us in so many ways.
