Fancy Dinner

Greg’s company recently had a new release that was a big milestone for them so to celebrate, everyone on Greg’s team was going to go out for dinner. Families were invited to come along, so Greg called me up to see if the girls and I wanted to come. I wasn’t sure I was brave enough to take the girls downtown and mess with the whole parking thing, but when Greg said he’d come home and pick us up first, I was all for it.

To be honest, had I known how fancy the restaurant was going to be, I wouldn’t have chanced it with the girls and would have stayed home and Greg would’ve had to go by himself. Greg didn’t think to tell me how fancy the place was when he invited me! And I assumed, with a name like Capitol Grille, (emphasis on the word “grill” and the fact that I didn’t know there was a silent e in their spelling of it) that it would be a laid-back place like we normally go to. Nope. No kids’ menu and I didn’t see another child in the place besides our three! Yikes. And they brought steamed hand towels out to the table after dinner for us to wash our hands with. Fancy! The cheapest item on the menu was like $45, and that didn’t include any sides. Just the main dish (steak, lobster, etc). Sides were ordered separately and with an additional charge. Ouch. Thankfully, Greg’s company was picking up the tab! The other employees brought their spouses but they didn’t bring kids. They were lucky enough to find sitters. (I had tried to find a sitter but was unable to.)

Our waitress did tell me that they did have a few things that they could make for the girls that were child friendly (and not on the menu). I was SO glad. Even their mac’n’cheese that they made for Bree was fancy (and delicious). Adrianna ordered a cup of clam chowder. She said that it was “so good that it makes me want to cry.”

So I guess in hindsight, it worked out that I didn’t know how fancy the place was going to be because I ended up going, had a delicious and outrageously expensive Filet Mignon and a nice time with adults (and our kids). But I am extremely thankful that all three girls were on their very best behavior! And that Cate slept the entire time. We were there for THREE hours and they were so well behaved. I was so proud of all of them. They received a lot of praise from Greg’s coworkers during the meal and also from Mom and Dad on the way home.
