A Perfect Afternoon Date with my Daughter

One of the things I absolutely love about only working part-time is the afternoons Adrianna and I have to spend together, just the two of us. Not that we don’t like having Greg around, but I feel the girl-time is so precious, especially now that she is so chatty. I know that sometimes she feels a little left out when Greg and I are having a conversation, as she often interrupts us when we are talking and then when we ask her what she wants, she makes up some gibberish nonsense because she just wants to be a part of things more than the fact that she really haves something to say.

This afternoon, Adrianna and I went to Macaroni Grill for lunch. I think she talked nonstop, except when our server would come over and ask her a question. She answered all his questions really well, but very softly so we could hardly hear her. While we waited for our food, we colored on the kid menu and also played “Wall-E and Eva”, which is a made-up game where we each take a crayon and pretend it is Wall-E or Eva and move the crayons/robots around on the paper, leaving crayon trails behind. Finally, our food arrived and we both enjoyed our fettuccine alfredo. Adrianna carefully wiped her mouth and hands with her napkin after almost every bite.

As we enjoyed our dessert, a couple who had sat in a booth opposite ours approached us and complemented Adrianna on her wonderful restaurant manners. Talk about making her mommy glow with pride. 🙂 (Believe me though, she has had some not-so-glowing moments in restaurants too, but more often than not she is pretty well behaved for a 3 year old.)

After lunch, we headed over to Walmart to do some grocery shopping. Adrianna enjoyed helping me pick out some fresh fruit and other items. She is pretty excited about her new Tinkerbell toothpaste, which she solely picked out because “it was a good movie.” Not sure that is the best criteria for picking out a consumable item, but I am sure the bubblegum flavor will be a big hit too.

While there, we tried some of the free samples, watched the fish, and also were pleased to bump into two of Adrianna’s friends, Paloma and Salome.

On the way home, we were listening to the radio when Chris Rice’s Come to Jesus song came on. It melted my heart when I heard a sweet soprano voice from the backseat singing along to the simple chorus lyrics.

Sing to Jesus. Sing to Jesus. Sing to Jesus and live.

  1. Aww…i love the times i get to be with one kid one on one too, not that i love them both together, but Layla is a typical spotlight stealer older sister to Aidan. But when they are alone their personality really is apparent. 🙂
