Why You Should Print Those Digital Scrapbook Layouts

Image of why you should print your digital scrapbook layouts

Do you print your digital scrapbook layouts? Or do they live only on your computer?

There are many reasons for printing out your finished digital scrapbook layouts. Reasons such as:

  • Printing may be safer than just storing digital files due to ever-changing technology
  • Printing scrapbook layouts gives you a “back up” of your memories (especially if you don’t print your digital photos!) in case your hard drive fails. One of my greatest fears is my computer’s hard drive failing and losing all our precious photos. For this reason, I do multiple backups. (A post for another day!) But having a printed scrapbook layout includes photos and journaling of those memories should this happen.
  • It makes you a better scrapbooker. When I see one of my layouts in print, sometimes details stand out to me that differ from when I looked at it in its digital form. For instance, you may find that the shadows you put on your photos do not look natural when printed, your text is too large (or too small!) Printing also helped me identify my preferred “style” and improved my overall scrapbooking habits by helping me see what I wanted to change in the future.
  • It is inspiring to hold your finished album! After all the hard work of creating your layouts, seeing them altogether as an album is quite a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction! But warning: it will make you want to scrapbook even more!

But one of my favorite reasons is this: Picture of my kids looking at our scrapbooked memories

To share your layouts with your loved ones. My daughters love to look at my completed scrapbooks. When I show them a layout on the computer, they are somewhat interested. But show them a finished book, and they will happily page through its entirety, reading the stories and laughing, while exclaiming, “Oh, I remember that! Oh, I’d almost forgotten about that!” the entire time. Printing may feel costly, but it is worth every penny.

How to Crop a Two-Page Template to Create a One-Page Template

Have you ever found yourself with a great two-page digital scrapbook template but decided you really only wanted to create a one-page layout, using just half (one page) of the template? It is really simple to do!

How to Turn a Two Page Template into a One Page Layout

Open the template in Photoshop.

First thing, do a “Save AS” and save your template under a new name. This ensures that your original template remains “as is” and all changes will be applied to your new copy. (This is super important, so you can reuse your original template again for future layouts – one of the beautiful things about digital scrapbooking!)

Select the Crop Tool. For a 12×12 layout, set it to crop 12 inches width by 12 inches height. (For an 8.5×11 layout, set the width to 8.5 inches by 11 inches height.)

crop_tool_settings

Select the side of the template that you want to use and draw a 12×12 square over that part, starting from one of the outer corners and drawing in. The settings you selected in the previous step will help ensure you grab the full 12×12 portion. Click the check mark once you have the full page selected.

Crop Tool Screen Shot

You have now updated your template to be a one-page template and can start clipping your photos and papers to the layers.

Scrapbook Layout Inspiration for Valentine’s Day

When it comes to scrapbooking Valentine’s Day, there are several topics you can choose from. You may want to make a page to remember a special Valentine’s date, a page about someone you love, or a child’s Valentine’s Day party at school. Perhaps you could tell a story about how you and your special Valentine met, or create a page about a favorite romantic spot or memory.

Check out these creative scrapbook layouts full of inspiration for scrapbooking your Valentine’s Day photos. I like that the first layout uses a dark gray color as the primary color for a layout about her son while another layout uses black as its primary color for a layout about a Valentine’s Day date. This use of non-traditional colors made the layouts stand out to me and proves that you aren’t limited to red and pink for your February layouts.

Valentines Day Scrapbook Paper

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought it was time to pull these Valentine’s Day / Love themed papers back out of the old archives and give them a little reboot. These were part of the Sweetheart kits I created back in 2009 and they have been in retirement for the past few years. They are now residing in my Etsy Store. 🙂 Happy Valentine’s Day!

Tutorial: Convert a 12×12 Template to 8.5×11

Today I’d like to share a tutorial with you on how you can change a 12×12 template to 8.5×11. In fact, I am going to share two different ways to do the conversion.

This tutorial was created in Adobe Photoshop but it should be pretty similar in Photoshop Elements. Here is the 12×12 template we will be working with.

Template Size Conversion Option #1

Step 1: Open your 12×12 layout and do a “Save as” so that you are working with a copy rather than your original file.

Step 2: Go to Image/Image Size.

Step 3: Change the Document Size to 8.5″ for Width and 11″ for Height. Make sure the Constrain Properties checkbox is NOT checked. Click OK. (NOTE: If converting a two-page template like in my example, the width should be 17″, which equals 8.5″+8.5″)

Step 4:And DONE! So simple and easy. You will see that the template’s shapes do resize slightly using this method. (The photo boxes are narrower because the overall layout was updated to be narrower.) For this reason, do not attempt these steps with a completed layout or your photos would get distorted. But for a template, it is no problem.

Template Size Conversion Option #2

Step 1: Open your 12×12 layout and do a “Save as” so that you are working with a copy rather than your original file.

Step 2: Go to Image/Image Size.

Step 3: Change the Document Size to 8.5″ for Width and 8.5″ for Height. Click OK. (NOTE: If converting a two-page template like in my example, the width should be 17″, which equals 8.5″+8.5″. The height would still be changed to 8.5″.)

Step 4: Go to Image/Canvas Size. Update the height to 11″. Click OK.

Step 5: Your canvas will now be 8.5×11. Since we’ve changed the canvas from a square to a rectangle, you will now see some transparent places in the template.

Step 6: Go to the background layer in the layers palette and fill the entire background with the original background color.

Step 7: And DONE! In this example, you will notice that the shapes from the original template maintain their original sizes in relation to each other. This is because we initially changed the template from 12×12 to 8.5×8.5, therefore keeping the original square of the layout. However, once we then elongated the height to 11″, the background now contains more white space. Since this is a template, feel free to resize or move any of the shapes to fill up the extra space or you can leave it as it is.

Here are the final results:

I hope this helps you on your scrapping journey. It should also open up a bunch of options for those 8.5×11 scrappers who have a hard time finding templates in their preferred scrapbook size!

Template Challenge – Coming in January

I’ve been asked to host a scrapbook challenge over at DigiShopTalk for their upcoming January Winter Get-Together so I’ve been busy creating a couple goodies for my part of the festivities. I can’t give away too many details yet, but I can tell you that it will include a couple of freebies for both 12×12 and 8.5×11 scrappers! 🙂

Here is a little sneak peek:

DigiShopTalk Sneak Peak

Two-Page Digital Scrapbook Template for 8.5×11 Scrappers (Template #76)

Also, if you are in the market for more 8.5×11 templates (especially multi-photo templates), I just added another one to my Etsy store as well. This one can accommodate up to 11 photos as well.

I am excited to start selling some of my designs over at Etsy. They are available as instant downloads so you can start using them right away. 🙂

I just wrapped up this new two-page (24×12) digital scrapbook template. It is one of my new favorites (of course, I think that about every new product I create!)
