For those of you who are interested in reading the journaling, it reads:

The decision to homeschool you for Kindergarten did not come right away. It was a series of events that started out with us realizing that we did not want to put you into our local school district since it was rated one of the worst in the state. Though we had put your name on a waiting list for a nearby charter school nearly 2 years in advance, by the summer of 2010 there were still 60-something children ahead of you in line to be accepted. So Greg suggested homeschooling.

I’ll admit, my first reaction to his suggestion was NOT in favor of the idea. Though I’d been homeschooled myself in high school and loved it, I just wasn’t sure I was up to the task. But as the summer went by, the idea grew on me until I realized that I was actually excited to keep my little girl home with me an additional year and to be your teacher.

Wouldn’t you know it, but the very charter school we’d originally hoped to enroll you in called us the very day after we’d ordered our homeschool curriculum with a spot open for the upcoming school year?

I thought about this new turn of events for all of 10 minutes and decided to continue on with our decision to homeschool. Though the school is great, they did not allow for part-time Kindergarten and I knew I was not ready for you to be gone for 5 full days a week, even though I am sure YOU would have handled yourself just fine.

So, here we are, a homeschooling family.

We enrolled you in a once-a-week homeschool co-op through another charter school so that you could meet other kids your age and also so that you could attend some of your favorite classes: art and recess!

When our own homeschool books arrived in the mail, you were so excited to start school that you begged me to start a day early. We are starting out with the Sonlight curriculum, which has a heavy emphasis on reading aloud, which I think we will both enjoy.

We now have one week of homeschooling under our belt. I think it went pretty well. You even asked me to do some school work today (Saturday). So we read another chapter in The Boxcar Children. I am already loving the fact that I can see exactly what you already know and what we need to work on together. You are such a smart, inquisitive girl. I am looking forward to being your teacher.

This past week marked my daughter’s first day of Kindergarten and also our first week of homeschooling.
