TV Turnoffs

Not too long ago, Adrianna discovered the power button on our TV. Now we have a difficult time keeping her away from it. She enjoys turning the TV off and on, over and over again. This is especially frustrating when we are in the middle of actually watching a TV show. Thank goodness for tivo, so at least we can see what we miss when she turns it off.

Telling her, “NO!” only seems to encourage her. Distraction doesn’t work. She quickly toddles back to the TV, her pointer-finger at the ready. When we see her finger reaching for the power button, we have tried lightly smacking her hand while saying, “NO.” This also doesn’t work. When I was trying this today, she actually started holding out her other hand for me so I could smack it, knowing what was coming. Hmmm… Little punk. I think we are just going to invest in one of those clear, plastic covers that you can place over the TV panel to keep little fingers away.

We had the same problem a little while back. Now he just goes to it when he wants to turn it on to watch his movies. He now loves turning on and off the light switches. We have different light switches here. Im working on discipling and saying no. So far, it’s not working. I look forward to reading more about how you are teaching Adrianna so I can steal any tips you might have.

hey there! our kids used to do this all the time. we used the flicking method. it stings a little more and caused some tears, but i didn’t feel nearly as mean as i did smacking (i’m such a softie)…after all, it’s just a flick. 🙂 🙂

so glad that there is someone out there who can relate with sharing food. too funny.

and as far as getting stuff done around here…it does get a little easier as they get older, but we also have a pretty – rigid?, not rigid, but regular schedule. of course, there are weeks (like this one, actually) where I feel like i get nothing done and the entire house could possibly be constructed of dirty laundry and dishes.

    🙂

ok, i gotta go. take care! i’ll look foward to hearing from ya again.

At least she hasn’t figured out how to put stuff in the dvd player yet! (You could try leaving the volume on really loud, so it startles her when she turns it on. Of course, you have to remember not to startle yourself!)

yeah the plastic cover would take away alot of aggravation. When I was baby sitting Elana, she was in that same stage, and I didnt know you could buy plastic to cover it. If I remember right it seems that I just put some duck tape over the buttons in such a way that It worked out that we could still use them but she could not.
